Picture hanging on plasterboard, brick and rendered walls

Picture hanging for framed art, heavy mirrors, canvases and gallery walls in homes and rentals across Melbourne's northern suburbs. We check the wall type and the weight first, then choose the fixing, so each piece hangs level and stays put.

Types of work

  • Single framed prints, canvases and photo frames hung at a consistent height
  • Gallery walls and multi-frame arrangements laid out before any drilling
  • Heavy hallway, bathroom and over-mantel mirrors on studs or rated fixings
  • Plasterboard, brick, concrete and older plaster walls
  • Living rooms, hallways and offices done as one multi-piece visit

Common problems

A heavy mirror and a hollow plasterboard wall

Plasterboard alone will not hold a heavy mirror on standard picture hooks. We locate studs or use hollow-wall anchors rated for the weight, and if neither is safe we say so before drilling.

Gallery walls that end up crooked

We lay the arrangement out first, agree the spacing with you, and level each frame against its neighbours, not just against itself.

Lease rules on holes

If you rent, tell us what the lease allows. We can use existing picture rails or hooks, keep fixings to what the load needs, and patch old holes if you are moving pieces around.

What this service includes

  • Wall type checked and fixings matched to the load
  • Level, evenly spaced hanging for single pieces and groups
  • Stud finding and rated anchors for heavy mirrors
  • Rental-friendly options where lease rules limit holes
  • Advice when a shelf or cleat suits better than hooks

What is not included

  • Art conservation, framing or frame restoration
  • Mirrors or heavy pieces on walls we cannot confirm will hold the weight

What to send for a quote

  • A photo of each piece with rough dimensions, and the weight for mirrors or large frames
  • A photo of the wall, plus the wall type if you know it: plasterboard, brick, render or old plaster
  • How the back is fitted: D-rings, wire, a French cleat or nothing yet
  • For gallery walls, the number of frames and any layout you have in mind
  • Your suburb, and whether you rent so we can respect lease rules on holes

Around Melbourne's north

Inner-north apartments and renovated homes in Brunswick, Northcote and Thornbury are mostly plasterboard. Many older houses in Coburg and Preston still have original lath-and-plaster or solid brick internal walls. Each needs a different drill bit and fixing, so a photo of the wall, and whether it sounds hollow when you knock, helps before we arrive.

Matching the fixing to the wall

A hook that holds a small print in plasterboard will fail under a heavy mirror. Light pieces go on purpose-made picture hooks; heavier pieces go into studs or onto rated hollow-wall anchors; brick and concrete get masonry plugs. Choosing the fixing after checking the wall is most of the job.

Height, spacing and level

Art usually sits best with its centre near eye level, and groups look intentional when the gaps are even. We measure, mark and check level across the whole arrangement before the final holes go in.

Picture hanging FAQs

Common questions answered for your peace of mind.

Often, yes. We find a stud or use hollow-wall anchors rated well above the mirror's weight, and check how the back is fitted. If the wall cannot carry it safely we tell you before drilling rather than risk it pulling out.
